Somehow, people are keen to ignore MGR for the 'noon meal scheme' as we know it now or some others want to make it out as though it was Kamaraj's scheme and hence unfair to credit MGR. Here is the timeline of events.
In 1918, Kurichi Rangaswami Aiyangar had begun a lunch programme for students of the Hindu Theological School.
In 1920 the Justice Party’s Sundarrao Naidu introduced free breakfast to pupils in a corporation preparatory school in Thousand Lights, Madras. Extended to four other schools by 1925, the paucity of funds saw an end to the avant-garde meal scheme and a consequent drop in school enrollment.
On 17 July 1956, Chief Minister Kamaraj introduced the midday meal programme in Ettayapuram, Tirunelveli district. The scheme was gradually expanded and, by 1963. 27,256 of the state’s 28,005 aided or government-run schools were covered.
However, in 1980, not even 10,000 schools were implementing this scheme and that too was done only for 200 days in a year.

Implemented over 52,000 centres, including 31,000 schools, it took the number of beneficiaries up to 65.7 lakh children.

Attendance at primary schools would go up to 96.2 per cent among the six to 11 age group and to 66.03 per cent in the 11 to 14 age group.
From 15 January 1983, the scheme would also cover 1,50,000 old age pensioners, orphans and destitute widows.
In 1987 Nedunchezhian recorded in the assembly that the number of total beneficiaries from 1983 at 92 lakh.
Nowhere in the world had was a scheme of this magnitude.
This was done without a gap, inspite of all opposition and ridicule from the media, administrators, revolt by teachers etc. Even the communists opposed it. But,the determination of the man was such that he overcame all opposition and as a result of this, to this day the scheme is alive.
One factor that is ignored which has particular significance today is - Kamaraj's scheme was sustained by the wheat and milk powder that came from the United States-dubious organizations with mostly evangelical backing. Unknown to Kamaraj, divisive seeds were stealthily sown and to this day Tamilnadu & India itself suffers as a result of these forces (although Kamaraj cant be blamed for it).
We must also not forget that prior to the British period, most temples gave free food to the people who visited. In fact, all our villages were temple centric and temple based.

MGR is possibly the most iconic leader in Tamil Nadu’s history. His fame was helped in great part thanks to his introduction of the Midday Nutritious Meal Scheme in the early 1980s.
Marudur Gopalan Ramachandran, or MGR – AIADMK founder, three-time chief minister, Bharat Ratna recipient – dominated Tamil Nadu’s stratosphere for four decades. In this richly detailed biography of the man often called vathiyar, or teacher, R. Kannan traces MGR’s life from his poverty-ridden years – he was a Class III dropout – to his rise as a matinee idol, before becoming a politician of repute.

NUTRITIOUS MEAL SCHEME
In between all this political maneuvering, MGR went ahead with his emphasis on the rural economy, cottage industries, strengthening last-mile connectivity, and, importantly, his social welfare measures.
On 1 July, MGR joined the children of Pappakurichi village, in Trichy district, for lunch, to inaugurate the now celebrated Midday Nutritious Meal Scheme. The meal programme initially covered 56.9 lakh rural schoolchildren, providing them a meal of about 400 calories a day.
Extended to the urban areas from September 1982, covering, in all, over 52,000 centres, including 31,000 schools, it took the number of beneficiaries up to 65.7 lakh children. The scheme provided employment to 1,80,119 persons, of which 1,58,387 were destitute women. The cost of the programme was Rs. 133 crore per annum.

Among the other measures MGR announced later were providing a job per family, on 2 September,10 and free tooth-powder for children, on 14 November 1982. In 1987, plans for free footwear were afoot. The age of freebies had arrived.

MGR said on the launch of the lunch scheme:
This scheme is an outcome of my experience of extreme starvation at an age when I knew only to cry when I was hungry. But for the munificence of a woman next door, who offered a bowl of rice gruel to my mother and us, when we were starving for three days, and saved us from the cruel hand of death, we would have left this world long ago. Such merciful women, having great faith in me, elected me as chief minister of Tamil Nadu.
To wipe the tears of these women I have taken up this project.
MGR little realised that he had etched a permanent place for himself in history books with the launch of this scheme. ‘It is epoch-making. Governments may come and go, but this scheme for 20,000 villages will go on,’ Somasundaram, the revenue minister, had said prophetically. The scheme itself was not new.

However, at the time of the launch of the new scheme, on 1 July 1980, the existing one covered only a third of the students for 200 days in a year. MGR had scaled it up 25 times. The new scheme covered all poor children for 365 days a year and the state bore the expenditure of 45 paise per head.
MGR also set up and chaired a high-power committee to monitor the scheme’s progress. Chief Secretary K. Diraviam served as member-secretary, with support from two dozen senior officials and a politician, and saw to the success of the scheme.
Jayalalithaa, who was the politician in Diraviam’s team, travelled across the state to spread the good word on the scheme. District collectors and party officials met her. On her return, she reported her findings on the administration and party affairs to the chief minister, who acted on them. She would later attribute her elevation in 1983 as propaganda secretary to this work.
Ironically, when the scheme was discussed in the Cabinet, Nedunchezhian and others had opposed it, fearing corruption and wastage. MGR vetoed them, saying that any scheme would see a certain degree of corruption and that the baby cannot be thrown out with the bathwater.
In MGR’s scheme, education was secondary and feeding was primary. When MGR suggested, ‘Let us provide a hot meal with vegetable dishes to the pupils, akin to the lunch served in a middle-income family to the children by their mother’, Aranganayagam was struck by his large heart and vision.
A committee that included social worker Rajammal Devadas was formed; Devadas took a leaf out of the UN’s World Food Programme book and adapted it to local needs. Greens and spinach were included and an ayah who had studied up to Class Ten was to take care of the pre-school children.
The scheme was ingenious and would do more than any of his other welfare measures to perpetuate his do-gooder image, leading DMK leader Murasoli Maran to perceptively comment:
MGR is grossly exploiting the state’s machinery and finances to project his own image by distributing alms. When he has failed on each front, he has started this to divert the people’s attention from their hardships.
But Kalaignar had gone further, charging that MGR was turning children into beggars. Taking offence, he argued that Kalaignar should have instead offered advice on how to better implement the scheme.
Ironically, when the DMK came to power, they were compelled to continue the scheme, adding eggs twice a week and, in the 2016 elections, promising milk. So popular was the programme. Much later, on 28 November 2001, the Supreme Court, acting on a public interest litigation, would rule that government and government-assisted primary schools should provide cooked mid-day meals.
But the state had a deficit of Rs 300 crore and a determined MGR had to find nifty ways of funding the project, which were not all kosher. A Chief Minister’s Nutritious Noon Meal Programme Fund was created and donations to it were exempted from income tax. Contributions to it became a pre-requisite for obtaining government clearances and for routine administrative orders. Another Rs 10 crore was raised by way of a day’s salary of government staff, one month’s salary from ruling party MLAs and MPs, and the earnings from one show at cinemas. But money was also raised in many controversial ways, when, within a year, MGR would relax prohibition, although S. Ramachandran said that it was done towards filling the party’s coffers.
India may start human clinical trials of ayurvedic drugs to treat COVID-19
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been exhorting the citizens of India to look at traditional systems during times of such global health crisis to boost their immunity
States like Haryana, Goa, and Kerala have started using ayurvedic medicines for asymptomatic patients and even frontline workers
India may soon start trials of treatment protocols on coronavirus (Covid-19) patients using ayurvedic medicines.
On the preventive front, many states, including Haryana, Goa and Kerala, have started using ayurvedic medicines for asymptomatic patients and even frontline workers.
“The ayush ministry had invited suggestions from ayurvedic and homeopathy practitioners across India. They got around 2,000 proposals. Now, the task force (formed for scientific validation of ayurveda and traditional medicine formulas through research institutions) that has been going through these proposals has shortlisted a protocol. It is expected to be notified soon,” said an industry source, who has been attending meetings with the ministry.
Once notified, these would then be tried on patients suffering from Covid-19 — first on asymptomatic ones or non-severe patients and also suspects.
Addressing the nation on Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi talked about traditional home remedies (like drinking warm water through the day and taking home-made immunity boosters).
He had earlier held a video conference with ayush practitioners. The task force has members from the department of biotechnology (DBT), Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and also ayush practitioners. It is deliberating on inter-drug reactions if a patient is administered an ayurvedic medicine to fight Covid-19 along with the regular allopathic therapy.
Speaking to Business Standard, ayush minister Shripad Y Naik said the ministry’s task force is scrutinising the proposals submitted by ayush practitioners. Then, it will send it to research organisations like the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) that is working actively on the Covid crisis.
“The ICMR would then revert to the ministry with its opinion – whether or not to go ahead with the line of therapy. In China, they have used traditional medicines along with allopathic drugs. We are awaiting a final decision on this and can expect it within this month,” Naik said.
He felt that since there is no established vaccine available for the novel coronavirus, ayurveda can be useful even as a preventive measure.
Meanwhile, some states like Haryana, Kerala, Goa have already started using it as a preventive medicine along with regular allopathic medicines. Sources said that some government hospitals are also using it to treat asymptomatic patients and those under quarantine.
“Ayurvedic texts have talked about epidemics, ways to control them and also illnesses that have very similar symptoms that the novel Coronavirus has. While there has been no clinical study on coronavirus patients, these therapies have been tried and tested over centuries. A singular treatment line is unlikely as ayurveda is highly customised according to the person’s prakriti or nature,” said Partap Chauhan, founder director of Jiva Ayurveda.
His organisation, with over 500 doctors, consults around 8,000 patients every day across the globe. Chauhan claimed that he has been getting distress calls from New York, where citizens want to know about simple home remedies they can adopt to stay safe.
In the first week of April, the Kerala government decided to use ayurveda to mitigate the spread of Covid. It classified people into seven categories for the purpose of administering medicines. Kerala chief minister has already said that Ayur Raksha clinics would be started at ayurveda dispensaries and hospitals. Even those recovering from Covid-19 would be given ayurvedic therapy to restore health.
The task force, too, is working on multiple protocols to be recommended for different groups of people having various underlying illnesses.
The industry feels that production of medicines, according to the protocol, would not be an uphill task as raw material is easily available and there are enough manufacturers in the country. Chandubhai Bhanushali, owner of Ayurchem and also the president of the Ayurvedic Drug Manufacturers Association (ADMA), that is affiliated to the CII, said that there are 9,500 ayurvedic companies in the country. Of this, only about 2 per cent are large firms like Baidyanath, Emami or Dabur.
There is also a network of around 600 ayurvedic hospitals across India that can roped in to treat asymptomatic or suspect patients, the industry felt.
Telangana has already notified ayurvedic hospitals for Covid-19 treatment. Whether these hospitals would act as quarantine wards following the treatment protocol of allopathy or would use ayurvedic therapy is not clear.
Whether or not the government recommends ayurvedic treatment, Indians have already started adopting this branch of medicine as a preventive step.
Online pharmacies have seen a spike in their ayurvedic drug sales. Prashant Tandon, chief executive officer (CEO) of 1mg, said it has seen a two-fold jump in sales of ayurvedic medicines and over-the-counter immunity boosting medicines in the last few weeks. Dhaval Shah, co-founder of PharmEasy, said sales of ashwagandha, moringa and chawanprash (immunity boosters) have shot up, post Covid.
Alexander never INVADED India. In fact he never even entered.
History books are replete with accounts of how Alexander invaded India. Even these accounts never go beyond the small kingdom of Porus. They always spin this story of how Porus who lost the battle demanded that he be treated as a King and the noble Alexander obliged. Alexander who had slaughtered and executed most in his way suddenly became a nobleman. Alexander who set out to conquer India simply decided to turn away at the gates of India, that too supposedly after defeating Porus.
The spin masters that accompanied every western King and subsequent falsifiers of history reversed our Indian concept of Dharma - Porus (Purushotaman) a minor King of a small Indian kingdom, stood 7-1/4 ft tall and his army defeated Alexander and as per the Dharma treated Alexander who had surrendered to him, with respect, and even assisted him in his return to his homeland. Here are 2 accounts - one from Georgy Konstantinovich Zhukov was a Soviet general and Marshal of the Soviet Union. During the Second World War, Marshal Zhukov oversaw some of the Red Army's most decisive victories. MarshalZhukov would know a fleeing force if he saw one; he had chased the German Army over 2000 km from Stalingrad to Berlin.
The other account is from the unique Capt.Ajit Vadakayil who has been in command of chemical tankers (mainly) for more than 6640 days -- spread over 30 years (a world record!) Capt. Ajit Vadakayil had dedicated his life to exhume the truth from our history that has been mangled by western historians and gutter rat communists. ----
Marshal Zhukov on Alexander’s failed India invasion

Alexander’s invasion of India is regarded as a huge Western victory against the disorganized East. But according to Marshal Georgy Zhukov, the largely Macedonian army suffered a fate worse than Napoleon in Russia.
In 326 BCE a formidable European army invaded India. Led by Alexander of Macedon it comprised battle hardened Macedonian soldiers, Greek cavalry, Balkan fighters and Persians allies. The total number of fighting men numbered more than 41,000.
Their most memorable clash was at the Battle of Hydaspes (Jhelum) against the army of Porus, the ruler of the Paurava kingdom of western Punjab. For more than 25 centuries it was believed that Alexander’s forces defeated the Indians. Greek and Roman accounts say the Indians were bested by the superior courage and stature of the Macedonians.
Two millennia later, British historians latched on to the Alexander legend and described the campaign as the triumph of the organised West against the chaotic East. Although Alexander defeated only a few minor kingdoms in India’s northwest, in the view of many gleeful colonial writers the conquest of India was complete.
In reality much of the country was not even known to the Greeks. So handing victory to Alexander is like describing Hitler as the conqueror of Russia because the Germans advanced up to Stalingrad.
Zhukov’s view of Alexander
In 1957, while addressing the cadets of the Indian Military Academy, Dehra Dun, Zhukov said Alexander’s actions after the Battle of Hydaspes suggest he had suffered an outright defeat. In Zhukov’s view, Alexander had suffered a greater setback in India than Napoleon in Russia. Napoleon had invaded Russia with 600,000 troops; of these only 30,000 survived, and of that number fewer than 1,000 were ever able to return to duty.
So if Zhukov was comparing Alexander’s campaign in India to Napoleon’s disaster, the Macedonians and Greeks must have retreated in an equally ignominious fashion. Zhukov would know a fleeing force if he saw one; he had chased the German Army over 2000 km from Stalingrad to Berlin.
No easy victories

Alexander’s troubles began as soon as he crossed the Indian border. He first faced resistance in the Kunar, Swat, Buner and Peshawar valleys where the Aspasioi and Assakenoi, known in Hindu texts as Ashvayana and Ashvakayana, stopped his advance. Although small by Indian standards they did not submit before Alexander’s killing machine. The Assakenoi offered stubborn resistance from their mountain strongholds of Massaga, Bazira and Ora. The bloody fighting at Massaga was a prelude to what awaited Alexander in India. On the first day after bitter fighting the Macedonians and Greeks were forced to retreat with heavy losses. Alexander himself was seriously wounded in the ankle. On the fourth day the king of Massaga was killed but the city refused to surrender. The command of the army went to his old mother, which brought the entire women of the area into the fighting.
Realising that his plans to storm India were going down at its very gates, Alexander called for a truce. The Assakenoi agreed; the old queen was too trusting. That night when the citizens of Massaga had gone off to sleep after their celebrations, Alexander’s troops entered the city and massacred the entire citizenry. A similar slaughter then followed at Ora.
However, the fierce resistance put up by the Indian defenders had reduced the strength – and perhaps the confidence – of the until then all-conquering Macedonian army.
Faceoff at the river
In his entire conquering career Alexander’s hardest encounter was the Battle of Hydaspes, in which he faced king Porus of Paurava, a small but prosperous Indian kingdom on the river Jhelum. Porus is described in Greek accounts as standing seven feet tall.
In May 326 BCE, the European and Paurava armies faced each other across the banks of the Jhelum. By all accounts it was an awe-inspiring spectacle. The 34,000 Macedonian infantry and 7000 Greek cavalry were bolstered by the Indian king Ambhi, who was Porus’s rival. Ambhi was the ruler of the neighbouring kingdom of Taxila and had offered to help Alexander on condition he would be given Porus’s kingdom.

Facing this tumultuous force led by the genius of Alexander was the Paurava army of 20,000 infantry, 2000 cavalry and 200 war elephants. Being a comparatively small kingdom by Indian standards, Paurava couldn’t have maintained such a large standing army, so it’s likely many of its defenders were hastily armed civilians. Also, the Greeks habitually exaggerated enemy strength.
According to Greek sources, for several days the armies eyeballed each other across the river. The Greek-Macedonian force after having lost several thousand soldiers fighting the Indian mountain cities, were terrified at the prospect of fighting the fierce Paurava army. They had heard about the havoc Indian war elephants created among enemy ranks. The modern equivalent of battle tanks, the elephants also scared the wits out of the horses in the Greek cavalry.
Another terrible weapon in the Indians' armoury was the two-meter bow. As tall as a man it could launch massive arrows able to transfix more than one enemy soldier.
Indians strike
The battle was savagely fought. As the volleys of heavy arrows from the long Indian bows scythed into the enemy’s formations, the first wave of war elephants waded into the Macedonian phalanx that was bristling with 17-feet long sarissas. Some of the animals got impaled in the process. Then a second wave of these mighty beasts rushed into the gap created by the first, either trampling the Macedonian soldiers or grabbing them by their trunks and presenting them up for the mounted Indian soldiers to cut or spear them. It was a nightmarish scenario for the invaders. As the terrified Macedonians pushed back, the Indian infantry charged into the gap.
In the first charge, by the Indians, Porus’s brother Amar killed Alexander’s favourite horse Bucephalus, forcing Alexander to dismount. This was a big deal. In battles outside India the elite Macedonian bodyguards had not allowed a single enemy soldier to deliver so much as a scratch on their king's body, let alone slay his mount. Yet in this battle Indian troops not only broke into Alexander’s inner cordon, they also killed Nicaea, one of his leading commanders.
According to the Roman historian Marcus Justinus, Porus challenged Alexander, who charged him on horseback. In the ensuing duel, Alexander fell off his horse and was at the mercy of the Indian king’s spear. But Porus dithered for a second and Alexander’s bodyguards rushed in to save their king.
Plutarch, the Greek historian and biographer, says there seems to have been nothing wrong with Indian morale. Despite initial setbacks, when their vaunted chariots got stuck in the mud, Porus’s army “rallied and kept resisting the Macedonians with unsurpassable bravery”.
Macedonians: Shaken, not stirred
Although the Greeks claim victory, the fanatical resistance put up by the Indian soldiers and ordinary people everywhere had shaken the nerves of Alexander's army to the core. They refused to move further east. Nothing Alexander could say or do would spur his men to continue eastward. The army was close to mutiny.
Says Plutarch: “The combat with Porus took the edge off the Macedonians’ courage, and stayed their further progress into India. For having found it hard enough to defeat an enemy who brought but 20,000 foot and 2000 horse into the field, they thought they had reason to oppose Alexander's design of leading them on to pass the Ganges, on the further side of which was covered with multitudes of enemies.”
The Greek historian says after the battle with the Pauravas, the badly bruised and rattled Macedonians panicked when they received information further from Punjab lay places “where the inhabitants were skilled in agriculture, where there were elephants in yet greater abundance and men were superior in stature and courage”.
Indeed, on the other side of the Ganges was the mighty kingdom of Magadh, ruled by the wily Nandas, who commanded one of the most powerful and largest standing armies in the world. According to Plutarch, the courage of the Macedonians evaporated when they came to know the Nandas “were awaiting them with 200,000 infantry, 80,000 cavalry, 8000 war chariots and 6000 fighting elephants”. Undoubtedly, Alexander’s army would have walked into a slaughterhouse.
Hundreds of kilometres from the Indian heartland, Alexander ordered a retreat to great jubilation among his soldiers.
Partisans counterattack
The celebrations were premature. On its way south towards the sea, Alexander's army was constantly harried by Indian partisans, republics and kingdoms.
In a campaign at Sangala in Punjab, the Indian attack was so ferocious it completely destroyed the Greek cavalry, forcing Alexander to attack on foot. In the next battle, against the Malavs of Multan, he was felled by an Indian warrior whose arrow pierced the Macedonian’s breastplate and ribs.
Says Military History magazine: “Although there was more fighting, Alexander’s wound put an end to any more personal exploits. Lung tissue never fully recovers, and the thick scarring in its place made every breath cut like a knife.”
Alexander never recovered and died in Babylon (modern Iraq) at the age of 33.

We all know the Greek and western poetry about the heroics of Alexander the Great, who invaded India in 326 BC and had King Porus on his knees. There are coloured paintings of this scene in most western museums.
The truth is totally different.
It is never too late to know the truth.
Alexander did self marketing and he had a horde of historians , painters and poets embedded in his army who wrote exactly what he wanted--to portray him larger than his five feet five inches of height.
Porus was a minor king of India, not finding mention anywhere except in the Battle of Hydaspes -- and that too by western accounts.
King Porus 's actual name is Purushottam ( some call him Parvateshwar ),the Puruvanshi king. He ruled the kingdom of Paurava in Punjab. He stood a majestic seven feet four inches tall--taller than the huge Great Khali wrestler of WWF. He was not in good terms with the King of Taxila.
King Alexander knew about this and he gave the King of Taxila 25 tonnes of gold which he had plundered from Persia, (after the battle of Gaugamela), as a bribe to ally with him. For he had heard that Porus had 85 elephants in his army and his own Greek army had never battled the war elephant.
On the way to battle Porus, Alexander's soldiers were psychologically battered. The soldiers saw astounding scenes of holy men hanging upside down from trees, and meditating, and it was apparent they had been doing it for a long time. If they fall asleep they would die. The guides of the army of Alexander were pupils of a professor from Taxila university by the name of Chanakya, the advisor to Mauryan empire
Alexander has also heard from his wife Roxxane,( daughter of a Bactrian noble Oxyartus), that the the Nandas of the Magadha Kingdom had 6000 war elephants (count by Plutarch ) and the Emperor
Chandragupta Maurya of the Mauryan Empire had 9000 war elephants. They also had hordes of Tibetan Mastiff dogs who could kill leopards and whip up a booming barking frenzy which terrified men and horses.
His cavalry horses would be no match for the mighty elephants.
