Review of the Hankook Dynapro MT

The Hankook Dynapro MT is a little above a "middle of the road" mud tire that does decent in various conditions.  Itslugs offer good mud traction with the help of large voidsspaced out enough to assist with the self cleaning of mud and debris.  Aired down the sidewalls flex good and are somewhat protected by a little extra rubber compound on across it's sidewalls.  In snow and sand this tire does a little better than average when compare to other mud terrain tires.  Highway manners are better than expected from a mud tire with less than moderate noise level however its lack of sipes in the lugs gives it poorer traction on wet or icy roads.  The tread of the designed to be able to add studs from better winter (and offroad) traction.  Tread life is also better than average.  Cost is on the low side of mud terrain tires.  Size availability is pretty good with sizes up to 40".

Manufacturers description of this tire:
The Hankook Dynapro MT RT03 is a rugged tire designed for "true off-road drivers." The V-shaped tread blocks are tapered for better grip in mud or sand and you should see them perform in snow. There are "ejectors" built into the tread grooves to prevent stones from penetrating. Specifically designed shoulders keep dirt from building up and to help prevent damage from impacts.

SkyTran, a path breaking transportation company

Google Chairman Eric Schmidt has placed his bets on skyTran, a pathbreaking transportation company which is cofounded by Indian engineer Ankur Bhatnagar.

NEW DELHI: Google Chairman Eric Schmidt has placed his bets on skyTran, a pathbreaking transportation company which is cofounded by Indian engineer Ankur Bhatnagar.

Bhatnagar, a BTech engineer from IIT-Roorkee and an MTech from IIT-Kanpur is the sole Indian cofounder of skyTran, a Nasa Space Act company which is headquartered at the Nasa Ames Research Center. Bhatnagar told ET that Schmidt has invested an in a Series-A round in skyTran through his venture capital fund, Innovation Endeavors. He declined to reveal the amount invested.

The company has developed a "third-generation" Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) technology which hopes to change the face of public transport across the world. Bhatnagar expects it to be operational in India in the next two years and hopes India will emerge as its biggest market. He said skyTran can transport passengers above surface traffic cutting the journey between Mulund and Colaba in Mumbai or Bengaluru airport to Electronic City in 25 minutes. The company is in different stages of negotiations with state governments and is currently targeting PRT opportunities in Jaipur, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Kerala. skyTran will have a network of computer controlled levitating 'jet-like' vehicles which will transport passengers above surface traffic.

Bhatnagar said he is in talks with states and industrial groups to build networks which can significantly reduce intercity and interstate travel times in India.

"The average speed of travel in cities is expected to be 120 km/hour. That means a user can expect to travel from Gurgaon to Noida in less than 25 minutes, for example. The speed of travel would be 250 km/hour on intercity routes. A journey between Delhi and Chandigarh or Delhi to Jaipur would just take an hour," said Bhatnagar who is designated as VP for skyTran in India. skyTran had previously received funding from US department of transportation.

The company's inventor is Douglas Malewicki, a graduate of Aeronautical Engineering from the University of Illinois and Bhatnagar chanced upon him around ten years ago and later came on board.

"I was hoping to start my venture in the public transportation space using mobiles and came across Malewicki's idea and requested him to take me on board," said Bhatnagar, who is spearheading business development for skyTran and had previously worked with Wipro and PwC.

He further added that the skyTran system can help alleviate deteriorating issues like congestion and pollution in India, and can help India build highspeed rail systems at one third of estimated costs. skyTran routes traffic in small packets, or small vehicles, at high speed just as internet routes data. The company promises all seated travel with no jostling and personalised routes. The vehicle will travel using magnetic levitation over the network on the user's personalised route directly to the destination non-stop.

5 Indicators That Contradict India’s GDP Figures

5 Indicators That Contradict India’s GDP Figures

India registered 7% growth between April and June on Monday, making it one of the world’s fastest-growing economies, according to official data.

But other key indicators of economic vitality aren’t as positive.
The Wall Street Journal made with Datawrapper

Vehicle sales last quarter didn’t show the kind of growth you would expect from an economy expanding at a rate of more than 7% per year.

Car, truck and two-wheeler sales are good indicators of consumers, corporate and farmer sentiment respectively. Overall vehicles sales barely budged last quarter, rising just 1% to 4.89 million vehicles.

Passenger vehicle sales were up 6.17%, commercial vehicle sales were up 3.55% and two-wheeler sales were up just 0.64%.

Indian officials had hoped for a pick-up in overseas demand for Indian-made products as Western economies gathered momentum. But the country’s exports have fallen for eight months in a row through July, underscoring continued stress in global economies.

In the year ended March 31, India’s exports totaled $310.5 billion, falling about 9% short of the $340 billion target. In the first four months of the current fiscal year things haven’t improved: goods exports have recorded a 15% decline–compared with the same period last year–to $89.83 billion. China’s move to devalue its currency has given its producers a competitive edge, damping export prospects of other economies, including India. In addition, the sharp drop in global crude oil prices, while good for India’s import bill, has come as a major downer for Indian petroleum product exports, which make up a big chunk of the South Asian economy’s total shipments.

The Indian currency hit a near two-year low against the dollar last week in the midst of the global selloff and was among the worst performing currencies in Asia. Fear among investors that the slowdown in China could cause a global slump was the main drag on the Indian currency. Analysts say the depreciation in the rupee is necessary to keep India’s exports competitive. They expect some more weakness later this year, depending on the U.S. Federal Reserve’s decision on lending rates. Foreign investors became big sellers in the Indian debt market in August, putting pressure on the rupee as they took dollars out of the local market.

The benchmark Sensex index was one of the top-performing indexes last year, but so far this year it has failed to shine. Since mid-2014, investors bought stocks on hopes that the economy would rise faster and boost profits. But that outcome has been elusive and analysts have started cutting their Sensex targets. Ambit Capital now sees the Sensex falling to 28,000 points, down from its earlier target of 32,000. If the Chinese devalue the yuan again, the Indian stock market could fall further.

Profits at big companies have barely budged since Prime Minister Narendra Modi came to power in India last year. The chart above shows the percentage growth of profits of companies in the benchmark Sensex index compared to a year earlier.

According to a Bank of America Merrill Lynch report, the profits of Sensex companies rose by only 1% during the April through June quarter, compared with 24% growth in the same period a year earlier.

Utilities and cement companies have dragged the average earnings growth as big private sector and government projects remained stuck waiting for government approvals. Metal and refining companies suffered due to the decline in oil and commodity prices.
